Anyone else pick this up - only £6 in my local HMV... It's both the DVD of the Hammersmith Apollo 2001 show and a CD of the same gig - so different live versions from those on the Roxy Music Live double CD.
But... a few words of warning.
The CD has crammed 20 tracks (the whole gig) onto one disc containing just 80 minutes. So how have they shoehorned all the songs in?
For a start the song order is all over the place, the flow of the original brilliant concert is entirely ruined (the disc opens with "Dance Away" for heavens sake!) and due to the re-ordering each song is separated by silence, which on a live album sounds plain wrong (the cheering fades out and fades in again).
OK so I could redo the song order and burn myself a new disc, except that most of the songs are edited to allow them to be squashed onto one CD. And boy do I mean edited!
For example -
"Jealous Guy" just stops after the vocal part - no long whistling big dramatic ending.
"For Your Pleasure" is cut down to less than 3 minutes as the crowd noise is faded up just as the 'Tara's begin.
"In Every Dream Home..." simply fades out at 4 minutes (and is oddly titled "In MY Dream Home..." - the writing credits are even worse - in a total failure of quality control we get "In My Dream Home" credited to Ferry / Mackay and a previously unknown song called "A Heartache" credited to Ferry...)
"Ladytron" is chopped back to less than 3 minutes, as is "Remake / Remodel" and "My Only Love" and many others.
Now, some of these edits are actually rather cleverly done, but most aren't and still, why issue such a butchered and shoddily put together package?
Interestingly there are no credits (apart from the songwriting ones) anywhere on this release. I guess no-one wants to be held responsible for such a mess.
Bill, have you any idea who was in charge of these severe editing decisions? I would imagine that no-one in the band approved this to closely.
Very disappointing really.
Cheers,
Richard
