With Gibson launching a re-vamped range of Firebird guitars who else to spearhead this than the man with most recognisable red, white and gold Firebird in the world?
An instrumental album will be coming out in June and there is the chance of some live performances to go with it over the summer.
Again more soon.

Bill,
Does Phil still have the non-reverse Firebird that served him so well on the "Siren" tour?

I believe he still has both the red and the brown ones but I will ask.

Got a CD of the current mixes of Firebird VII yesterday. Oh my!! This is more Weather Report than Roxy Music The tracks all merge into one another and some of the playing is remarkable. I suspect this willl prove to be a bit of an eye opener for people used to Phil's more recent song based material. Live, it could be astonishing.

Bill,
I think that's excellent news! I've always thought that Phil's guitar work on "Mainstream" was superb and more "brains on carpet" playing will be welcomed by me!!

Bill, The opening track, which I think you composed, is excellent! Just wondering when the track was written, how was it written, it what form has it survived over the years (demo, TAB etc) and if you wrote the guitar part etc etc - in other words any info on the track gratefully received!! Roger

It was written, along with a couple of other pieces I recently found, for Quiet Sun in late70/early 71 but was never rehearsed/played. In those days we pretended we were real musicians so it was fully written out on proper sheet music (get me!) with bass parts, lead parts, chords, etc. Phil was planning to have a go at a piece my late brother wrote for the band called 'A Parking Ticket' and I gave him the only copy of the score. It was then 'mislaid' but, whilst looking for it, Phil came across FIHOWM. I turned up at the studio when the lads were about to give it a go somewhat fretful that it would make no sense whatsoever but Leszek made sense of it and before you could say 'progressive rock band' they were off giving it some. Phil then ruined it (?!*) with all that guitar stuff. I should sue! Nah, really, they've made a silk purse out of a pig's ear or something like that!
I have suggested a radical idea to PM for the reissued QS CD, i.e. that we should send Leszek copies of the other two pieces and ask him to run off a quick piano version of them. If they are at all 'worthy' then a Quiet Sun MkII (not including me, I hasten to add) might get together to record them quick smart as part of the re-release of the complete Quiet Sun body of work.

Thanks Bill. It's always nice to get some background about a track that you like. IMHO the piece has stood the test of time and sounds pretty good to me! By the way, can you shed any light on Phil's gear for the album. Was it his original Firebird used on the recording and what did he use in the way of amps and effects? Thanks, Roger
